Treasure hunting with a beach metal detector has been an enjoyable pastime for thousands of people all over the world. Every year it continues to grow in popularity as beach metal detectors become more sophisticated and less expensive. Modern metal detectors allow treasure hunters to find a wider variety of targets at deeper depths than ever before.

Even though treasure hunting happens in all sorts of environments, beach metal detecting is still one of the most common locations for many metal detection enthusiasts.

The combination of great finds, easy recovery and pleasant surroundings make the beach the perfect location for finding lost treasure.

Unlike other terrains that require more sophisticated equipment to locate an item, the clean sand found on most beaches makes finding a buried coin or piece of jewelry easy and fun for both the novice and more seasoned hunter.

There is a wide variety of beach metal detectors available that can help you in your treasure hunting efforts.

Even though beach metal detecting may seem very similar to searching other locations, there are a few precautions that you need to be aware of before starting your hunt.

Two of the biggest hazards found on any beach metal detecting adventure are sand and water, both of which can easily damage the sensitive electronics of your metal detector. Even though the search coil of almost all metal detectors is waterproof, the display assembly and electronics can be damaged if they get wet.

Some metal detectors protect against this by sealing any electronics in an airtight case, but it’s still best to check your detector before bringing it out for a day of metal detecting on the beach.

Sand is another problem for many metal detectors and can cause a host of problems if it works its way into the mechanical parts of your best metal detector.

For example, the headphone jack is just one place that sand could enter the electronics compartment if you lay your detector down while digging out a find. If you are using headphones, this hole is protected but if you decide not to use headphones on a particular trip to the beach, be sure to plug this hole to avoid problems.

Another area of concern is the areas around the knobs and buttons found on the control unit for many detectors. If sand works its way in behind these knobs it can make them difficult to turn and damage the controls as well. Of course if you have a waterproof metal detector then you do not have these concerns.

One way to avoid the chance of this kind of damage is to always use the arm cuff of your detector and never lay it down in the sand.

You should also keep a clean towel with you to give the beach metal detector a good dusting once you leave the beach for the day to remove any sand and moisture from the unit.

A small can of compressed air can help with this and make the cleaning easier. These can be found at any local camera shop of electronics store.
